This is a versatile breed. Although the Canaan Dog does not excel in any area, it is smart and quick to learn, ready and willing to engage in virtually any canine activity, from tracking to herding, from obedience to agility. He draws the line only when he jumps into a cold lake to catch a bird. Canaan today retains primitive herding skills, and some have passed the herding test and produced excellent results. The Canaanite herding instinct is not as strong as in some other breeds, especially the Border Collie, nor does it possess the sense of purpose of some sporting breeds. Few Canaanites will tackle the ball a hundred times in a row. Canaan is moderate in behavior as well as in appearance.
