This breed is generally considered healthy but tends to fall prey to certain strains of genetic health problems, similar to those found in purebred breeds. These can include progressive retinal atrophy, which culminates in blindness and hypothyroidism, and congenital deformity of the larynx, which causes the dog to wheeze when breathing; this feature has earned the Alaskan husky the nickname “wheezing”.
