The Spaniards used the dog mainly for bullfighting, and in other European countries for hunting purposes. At the beginning of the 20th century, due to the ban on the use of dogs for baiting, as well as due to changes in hunting legislation and a decrease in hunting grounds, the Alano almost disappeared. Several hunters managed to save a small number of individuals.
