The small structure of the black and tan Coonhound makes the dog strong, fast, and agile. The body is quite long, the bones are strong enough. Long ears help to smell the ground. The wide muzzle has plenty of room for the sense of smell. A low voice allows the owner to hear the dog when it begins to bark after driving its prey into a trap. The coat is short but thick, providing protection in all weather. Facial expression is alert, friendly, and active. Gait is light and graceful, head and tail are raised high.
