The Skye Terrier classification included the Cairns as well as the dogs that are now known as Scottish Terriers, West Highland White Terriers. These breeds differed only in color, as all three could have come from the same litter. The Wirehaired Scotch Terrier Club for three breeds was established in 1881; the standard was approved in 1882.
