The Irish Water Spaniel was developed by Justin McCarthy in the first half of the 19th century, and a decent result appeared in 1830 or so. Justin was a hunter and wanted to breed a dog that would correspond to his ideas about the ideal hunting dog, capable, among other things, of pulling a downed bird out of the water.
