The second name is the Appenzell Shepherd Dog. The breed received its name because of its original habitat – the city of Appenzell, located in the north-east of Switzerland. The second part of the name comes from the word “Zenn”, as the shepherds were called in the Swiss mountains. The Rottweiler is considered a fairly close relative of the Appenzeller.
