The name Sennenhund comes from the German Senne – alpine meadow and Hund – dog, as they were companions of the shepherds. Bern is the name of a canton in Switzerland. Bernese Mountain Dogs have hundreds of years of history, they are considered a relatively young breed since they were officially recognized in 1907.
