The Chinese bred the dog for its excellent ability to catch rats on board their ships, and the sailors sold it in different ports. European documents about the bald dog, very similar to the Chinese crested dog, date back to the 1700s, when European travelers visited Chinese seaports and boarded Chinese merchant ships.
