The Border Terrier has a double coat. The outer layer is rough and dense, without curls and waves, protects against rain and dirt. The undercoat is short, soft, and dense, providing good protection from the cold. The skin under the coat should be loose (not close to the main body) and thick so as not to be injured when jerking.
