The Basset Hound breed was on the verge of extinction during the French Revolution. The revolutionaries considered the breed to be one of the symbols of the aristocracy, so they mercilessly destroyed it. The surviving animals, once in the UK, were happened to Bloodhound, resulting in longer ears and a more elongated torso. Also, wrinkled skin has become a feature of the English branch of the breed. The English branch of the short-legged hounds is called the Basset Hound.
