It is believed that the first progenitors of this glorious breed appeared on the island together with Varangian colonists at the end of the 9th century AD. Since then, the breed has existed practically unchanged, since practically no other dogs were brought to Iceland, and in 1901 the import of dogs from the continent was officially banned altogether.
