Dr. Menzel and her husband acquired several desert dogs and began to breed them, recording and updating their pedigrees. They trained their new breed in patrol work, landmine detection and message delivery, and they actively participated in the military in the Middle East during World War II. After the war, some dogs began a second career as guide dogs. By 1948, the Palestinian Kennel Club had registered 150 of them.
