The first serious references in the literature about the Appenzeller Sennenhund can be found in the middle of the 19th century, but it was not until 1989 that the breed was officially recognized by international organizations. Moreover, if the International Cynological Federation classified them as cattle dogs, then the American Kennel Club did not recognize them at all, like some other English-speaking clubs.
