The first individuals of this breed appeared in 1853 – it was then that British dog enthusiasts tried to cross several breeds in order to breed a large terrier capable of swimming and hunting small rodents and waterfowl such as badgers and otters. The attempt was crowned with success when the breeders crossed the Otterhound and the Black and Tan Terrier.
