In Norway, found ancient fossil remains of dogs, whose skeleton is no different from the skeleton of modern Elkhounds. With these dogs, the Scandinavians hunted for a thousand years BC, and later they began to accompany the Vikings on sea voyages. Elkhounds were also used for hunting a wide variety of animals – rabbits, deer, lynx, bears, and elk. They appeared in Britain shortly after the First World War, and in 1935 the American Kennel Club recognized the breed. Today Elkhounds are used as hunting dogs only in some areas of Scandinavia.
