During World War II, Dobermans served in the United States Marine Corps. For services to the army, they were awarded the title “Semper Fidelis” (“Always faithful”). They were also called “the dogs of the devil”. The speed of reaction, invulnerability, fearlessness made these dogs unsurpassed when performing special missions in the war. They were on guard duty, they were used as orderlies, sappers and paratroopers. In honor of the breed, the “Doberman Club” of the United States on the island of Guam erected a monument with the names of 25 Marine Dobermans who gave their lives for the liberation of the island in 1944.
